The development of a European market for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen is an important factor for the success of the energy transition in Europe. Among other things, renewable and low-carbon hydrogen can contribute to the decarbonization of sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy goods transport or certain processes in industry, and as a flexibility factor to stabilize an electricity system based predominantly on renewable energies.

However, the ramp-up of the hydrogen sector in Europe is currently faltering, not least due to uncertainties regarding the legal framework and financing. Hydrogen certification is also a challenge that needs to be addressed to develop a dynamic market in Europe, guaranteeing both producers and buyers the conformity and nature of the hydrogen being marketed, for example when it comes to meeting decarbonization objectives in industry.

In this one-hour webinar, Sibylle Weiler (Bird & Bird) and Flore de Durfort (Atmen) will give an overview of the current European legal framework for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, explain the challenges involved in its certification and present innovative solutions.

The following questions will be addressed:
• What is the current legal framework for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen at the EU level as well as in Germany and France?
• What role does the EU's new Clean Industrial Deal play for the hydrogen ramp-up in Europe?
• What are the challenges of hydrogen certification? What innovative solutions are there?
